Backgrounds:

Backgrounds are usually created in the first couple of layers of the timeline, to give the layout and design of the flash movie. They can be made using imported image files, or made in Flash itself using the variety of drawing tools available.

> Shapes and freeform drawing, pens, pencils and paintbrush styles

> Paintbucket, gradient or texture fill styles, an infinite choice of colours

> A full selection of line styles

Image 1

Image 1 above shows the bottom layer highlighted, which is holding the green 'grass' and the blue 'sky'. These are vector graphic fills, (more later), providing a nice tidy base for the rest of the movie items to sit on.

Press F6 on a layer in order to create a keyframe and place anything on it. To 'lengthen' a layer - give it more frames - press F5. To create another 'keyframe', press F6 again.

The blue sky has been created with the rectangle tool [left toolbar] and is stretching over the main stage area, so as to not have white gaps showing in the final movie. The grass has been created with the freeform drawing paintbrush [left toolbar], using a fairly wide brush width, and drawing all round the bottom half of the stage, so as to enable filling the green shape once the line has been drawn.
